  • I am raising money for Erev Plugah (company night) for battalion 8110, company gimmel which is  a proud combat unit of reserve soldiers in the Israeli Defense Forces. I am a Raleigh native and a First Sergeant in this company.

Every time we do miluim (reserve duty in Hebrew) the logistics officer asks each soldier to give 50 shekels so that he can organize a nice company evening and have snacks for us once we finish a night of training. We are a group of men that leave our jobs, families and our lives to return to our lives as young soldiers so we can do our small part to help protect the Jewish state.  Several of the soldiers in my company were in active service during either the Second Lebanon War in 2006 or the Gaza war in 2014. Also Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev were a part of our company. They were the first two soldiers that were abducted by Hezbollah and their kidnapping was what started the Second Lebanon War. My first time doing reserve duty we had a barbecue to honor the soldiers that were retiring from miluim and spoke about the horror of that day.

The last time I did miluim they came to me at 11:00 PM to see if I could raise $150 so that we could have a croissants and drinks at 4 AM . I am the only American of the group and they figure I would know who to ask. My father donated the money and the logistics officer wanted to take a picture so I could send to thank our "big" donor. The only reason I am not in the picture is because I was too busy sleeping on a cement floor to join in!

I asked the logistics officer how much should I see if I can raise before next time and he said if I could raise 4000 NIS (roughly $1000) it would be incredible. This money would go to the barbecue, snacks and all the other daily supplies. This would be a tremendous honor for the synagogue and something that is realistic to accomplish. Personally it would bring me great nachas to help form a partnership between my synagogue and my new company.

Any additional money will be donated directly to Yashar L"Chayal (literal definition is direct to the soldiers) which is a grassroots organization that gives 100% of donations directly to the soldiers. All of their overhead expenses are paid for by a family in Miami. They do several different projects like buying soldiers supplies for the winter, helping soldiers with living expenses, and organizing fun activities for combat soldiers. As a former IDF soldier this is the ONLY IDF-related organization to which I donate.

    Thank you for your generosity.
